To be bluntly honest, this afternoon at RAFW dragged a little. Mainly because of the various holes in my schedule and the vibe of the day wasn’t as upbeat at you would think for the 15th anniversary of a fashion week. But my day brightened by the time Deborah Sam and Mary?Lou Ryan’s Bassike spring/summer 2010-11 show started. It was just the kind of collection that has the glitz and red carpet appeal, but I like Australian ready-to-wear because a) I can afford it, and b) I can see myself wearing to work/out on the weekend.
Entitled ‘Silence in Dichotomy’, Bassike’s spring summer 2010 collection opened with a film by Gemma Lee and Charlie Clausen depicting the nature that inspired the collection. For a collection that can boast that it uses 100% organic cotton jersey in its design, it was a far cry from any other run-of-the-mill t-shirt brand. In fact it was a sophisticated collection with fabulous web-like knits that are popular on the international runways lately and smart androgynous suits and colourful shift dresses. As with any jersey label though, there were loose tanks, dresses and skirts for women and men to keep things casual. But demin and buttery soft leather were also thrown in to keep things interesting.
