Milan Fashion Week

The fashion world is currently flooded with "hot, young" designers creating quirky collections that seem unwearable, so it's always good to see a classic name such as Giorgio Armani on the catwalk. His Spring/Summer 2008 collection, which was presented yesterday as part of Milan Fashion Week, consists of elegantly tailored womenswear. He is very traditional in both his designs and presentation as the show began with day wear and build up to eveningwear. The daywear relied on a very neutral palette with midi length skirts and shorts. Cinched in waists were emphasised with cropped, tailored jackets. Wrap over jackets and dresses were key as they highlighted the return of a curvy shape.

The middle part of the vast collection worked with a key colour for next season, navy blue. It's a great day to night colour that has been featured in many catwalk shows this season. The daytime silhouette continued with the hemlines being raised slightly. Voluminous shapes were used for the lower half, such as hareem pants, but updated with luxurious materials such as satin and chiffon.

The eveningwear line previewed a lot of dresses that you're sure to spot on the red carpet over the coming year. Chiffon was draped, and intricate beading used to decorate maxi length black dresses. Unusually, Armani styled the dresses with flat black pumps, they were also accessorised with small, beaded sac-clutch bags.

There were also a line of silver evening pieces including a strapless jumpsuit in a metallic leaf print fabric. There was a distinctive '30s flapper feel to these pieces which were teamed with sequin skull caps and large statement jewellery. Nearly all the dresses had plunging necklines revealing the clavicles. The final dress was a beautiful vintage lace dress worn with a long, golden shawl.

Milan Fashion Week: Etro spring/summer 2010 collection

Milan Fashion Week

Giorgio Armani looked in future and explored the world of ‘plastic fantastic’ in his younger, Emporio Armani collection at Milan Fashion Week. Armani exploded colors like fireworks on graphic PVC catwalk, sending a clear signal that he is back once again, working at full creative power after battling with hepatitis over summer.

It was designer’s second show in Milan, but this collection delivered an equally vibrant Giorgio Armani main line for spring/summer 2010. Bikinis and swimsuits were bedecked with Plexiglas brooches and necklaces as bright as molten lava, while sandals featured crimson Perspex heels and ankle-straps. Short, party dresses in Vesuvian shades of fuchsia and bright orange, were cinched with shiny, shocking-pink, and patent-leather belts.

Banana Republic’s Fall 2010 collection

With military influences remaining such a strong trend both on and off the runway (every other person on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg sports a green army jacket these days), it’s no surprise Banana Republic’s Fall 2010 collection was heavy on utility pieces. The retailer certainly knows a thing or two about the style—it originally peddled safari vests and field coats before being acquired and rebranded by Gap.

Creative director Simon Kneen turned out twill miniskirts, an olive-drab wool dress, and slim cargo pants, which he paired with washed silk frocks and great cardigans tailored to resemble ladylike jackets. “It’s all about the modern mix,” he said backstage. “Formalwear mixed with casual attire and sportswear.” The mostly neutral procession of looks wasn’t the most exciting big-brand collection we’ve seen, but Kneen’s mix-it-up message speaks to the approach these companies must take now: “It’s about the individual, rather than a uniformed look.”

Krishna Mehta’s Indian Bridal Collection at Lakme Fashion Week

Timeless, elegant, contemporary are the words that come to our mind everytime we watch Krishna Mehta’s show. It was no different this time – Krishna presented a beautiful collection of ethnic wear with minute touches of western elegance at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2010.

Heavily embroidered jackets were teamed with saris or lehengas. Colours were muted and sophisticated with touches of silver and gold, crème and beige with gentle hints of black, red and purple. Loved the intricate chikan work and the rich sequined embellishments that Krishna used lavishly to give a festive touch to the creations.

We are so lusting after the structure cropped jackets with free free flowing lehengas. And that lemon georgette lehenga is going to get snapped in a second.
