Born on October 26, 1967, to parents Bob and Marienne, Keith Lionel Urbahn and his brother Shane grew up in Whangerei, North Island, New Zealand.
The family soon moved to Australia and by the age of 6, Keith began learning to play the guitar. By 7, Keith already knew that he wanted to become a country singer and was planning on moving to Nashville, Tennessee, when he got older.

At 8 years old, Keith was already walking away with prizes from talent contests and when he was all of 12, he was booking his band in local clubs in Australia.
By the time he was 15, Keith had no doubt in his mind that he wanted to be a country music singer and he dropped out of school to pursue his dream full time.
The next few years would prove difficult for Urban, as he was unable to get signed by a major record label and did not want to make the move to Nashville until he was certain that he could make it in the United States.

In 1990, Urban’s prayers were answered and he got a record deal with EMI Australia. The following year, his self-titled debut hit the airwaves and music store shelves, and Urban charted at No. 1 with four singles from the album. It was time.
By 1992, Urban picked himself up and made the move to his dream locale - Nashville. Although he started out as the singer in a band called The Ranch, and the trio released an album in 1997, Urban soon opted to go it alone.
But by the end of 1997, Urban had become severely addicted to cocaine and his career took a backseat to his habit. It took him a year to realize that he had hit bottom and in 1998, Urban finally checked himself into the rehabilitation clinic, Cumberland Heights.

Taking no time to rest on his success, Urban released another album in 2002 entitled Golden Road, and the album went triple platinum in the United Stated, thanks mainly to the success of his hit single “Somebody Like You.”

By the time 2004 rolled around, Urban was set to go again, and he released his third solo U.S. effort, Be Here. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, and although Urban didn’t walk away with the prize, he did end up meeting Nicole Kidman, whom he married on June 25, 2006. Only four months later, Urban checked into a rehabilitation center to overcome another addiction to cocaine. Now the two are expecting their first child in July 2008 and are definitely working things out.
After spending 2005 touring and performing at the Live 8 Philadelphia concert, Urban released the album Days Go By, a greatest hits album, in the UK only.
